Pull quote. Every year Sally Holbrook spends several weeks in the tropics studying damselfish and working out of the University of California's Gump Biological Research Station on the island of Moorea, French Polynesia. Several students travel with her, contributing to the field work on these expeditions.

Back in Santa Barbara, she studies the population dynamics of surfgrass, a plant that grows in the intertidal zone. Her research is providing important information on how to restore damaged populations of surfgrass when, for example, a pipeline is installed.

According to Holbrook, there is a surge in student interest in biology, ecology and environmental biology. "Today students are very concerned about environmental issues like global warming and pollution," says Holbrook. "There is a need for scientists to provide more information and insight about environmental issues that can feed into policy systems, to provide a foundation for decisions by policy makers."
