Pull quote. As a white person, working on black culture here in America puts you, like it or not, face to face with racial politics," says Catherine Cole, who is a scholar of Ghanaian popular theatre. "When I first realized what I was in for, I nearly fled."

In Ghana, Cole found "that so many things I had taken for granted about the world were in fact specific to where I was from-the USA-and not universal."

Her course "Race, Gender, and Performance" is part of her vision for a more racially integrated environment. The students study and discuss plays, theories, and how these issues are enacted through plays and their own lives at UCSB.

"I love that class. I feel this is the work that needs to be done. We talk a lot about diversity in higher education, but real change won't happen until we unlearn sexism and racism."
