Muriel Zimmerman holds a doctorate in English literature, but says that on-the-job training in a technical editing job and computer courses at Santa Barbara City College were instrumental in her current career success as a technical writing instructor at UCSB and MIT. She created and has directed the program at UCSB, which evolved from a single class for mechanical engineers in 1981 to an array of courses today that can lead to a minor in professional communication. "Whatever career path a student chooses, he or she will have to communicate effectively to general and to specialized audiences," she says. These methods of communication include written documents, oral presentations, Web-based publications, and multimedia portfolios. "It's a very exciting field," Zimmerman says. "We work closely with area high-tech firms to stay current." Go to catalog listing for: Writing
