Shuji Nakamura quote

Before he became a member of the UCSB faculty in fall 2000, Shuji Nakamura had been an industrial researcher in Japan where he developed an international reputation for his revolutionary research in the field of gallium nitride-based electronic materials and devices. His colleagues in the College of Engineering have called him the Thomas Edison of Japan because his inventions there have set white Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) on course to replace the incandescent light bulb.

He continues his pioneering research heregarnering numerous awards and honorswhile adjusting to teaching responsibilities, which were not part of his former career.

Nakamura says "a professor has to do everything." But he is impressed with the quality of the students, whom he characterizes as "very, very smart," and the helpfulness of his faculty colleagues. "All the professors help me; they are very collaborative." He adds, "It's beautiful here, and I have lots of freedom. I love this job."
