Cecilia Méndez quote

Historians' choice of topics and characters reveal a lot about their own desires, fears, frustrations, and ambitions," says Cecilia Méndez. "When historians look into past societies they are always in search of something about themselves."

She adds, "Provided that historians are aware of their own subjectivity, and honest in their treatment of the sources, this subjectivity produces much insight. A historical work so conceived can become universal, because human beings of all times and places share more than what is commonly acknowledged."

What she likes about being a historian is being in the present: "Everything you see and experience is subject to historical examination. Nothing escapes history, and everything matters," she says.

What Méndez likes most about teaching is learning. "Teaching opens new windows for my research, and make me remain creative." Teaching methods vary depending upon the audience, although "with motivated students, every method works," she says.
