Most of Amy Kyratzis's students are working on doctoral degrees in education. Although some will become K-12 teachers, it is more likely "they will teach teachers of K-12," or do research that informs educators about the design of curricula and school contexts. What she wants her students to learn is to become "good, ethical researchers who apply their skills to the study of important social issues, such as improving our understanding of how contexts influence development, how bilingual children develop, and how children learn to use language to organize their social lives." Kyratzis, who has been at UCSB seven years and takes advantage of its location to "take walks on the beach whenever possible," made her career choice when, as an undergraduate, she took a course in child development "and was hooked."
