Richard Hecht quote

In 28 years at UCSB, Richard Hecht has never lost his enthusiasm for teaching. "I love it," he says. "What continually fascinates me is students' extraordinary ability to change."

Although he teaches a full load of courses in the College of Letters and Science, Hecht volunteered some years ago to teach classes in the College of Creative Studies (CCS). Hecht says that students in CCS participate "very actively" in class. "They take ownership of the course material, engaging me in spirited dialogue and thoughtful questions right from the start."

He adds, "There is a maturity to many of the students in CCS which makes these courses very exciting for the students and for me." Also, the classes in the college are small and "I can get to know the students."

Hecht says he likes to create new courses that he can co-teach with faculty in other disciplines, such as a class in religion and film. "All of these classes get into the issues of meaning," he says.
