A member of the faculty since 1966, James Hartle is proud to have been part of the development of one of the most highly ranked Physics Departments in the country. He says this is due largely "to an outstanding departmental faculty, a close relationship with the College of Engineering, and the presence of the Institute for Theoretical Physics on campus," a national center for innovative research. He says that undergraduate as well as graduate students benefit greatly from the expertise in the department. "Students get a contemporary perspective on the subject from a person who is excited about what he or she is doing," he says. "If students grasp that what they are learning is being done here and now, they'll 'catch' the excitement." Physics undergraduates can and do conduct research with top faculty, Hartle says, which is a "great opportunity for them to get involved with frontier science and do something that's never been done before.''
