Students teach professors how to teach them, says Miguel Eckstein. "In my daily exercise as a teacher, I have learned to explain complex concepts and theories in simple and intuitive terms." A primary focus of Eckstein's teaching is to teach students to generalize some of the concepts and tools they have learned in his classes and apply them in solving new problems. "This ability will help them succeed in any life venture." Learning from someone actively engaged in research helps students develop critical thinking skills, he says, because "a good researcher tends to question everything and think ideas through very carefully and not simply accept facts at face value." A well-considered question from a student "always puts a smile on my face," Eckstein says. "To have students tell me I've made a difference in their lives is one of my greatest satisfactions as a teacher," he adds. Go to catalog listing for: Department
