Teaching and research are not mutually incompatible; in fact, quite the contrary is true, according to Jon Cruz. "Teaching and research drive one another. Each has its place within the cycle of intellectual and human growth, and are deeply compatible." He adds that "research that cannot be shared is dead knowledge." Learning from a researcher means that students are engaged with issues crucial to the inner workings of problems as they are posed, Cruz explains. In Asian American studies, Cruz says that the courses offered highlight Asian American lives more concretely and with freedom to elaborate. "Rather than viewing Asian Americans through a perspective that treats them tangentially, our classes emphasize both the lived experiences as well as the sociohistorical structures of their lives." As a teacher, Cruz says, "The more pleasurable moments for me occur when students are able to forge strong connections between their own lives and what they are being asked to learn."
