Paula Bruice has been teaching at UCSB for more than 30 years and has given no thought whatsoever to retirement. "I don't know what I'd do if I couldn't teach I absolutely love it," she says. "I love seeing the sparkle in the eyes of my students when they get it." Although she has very high expectations for her students, Bruice says, "I'm there to help them meet my expectations." She is currently writing the fourth edition of her textbook, "Organic Chemistry," which has been widely praised for its clarity. Her book is used in university classrooms all over the United States, so she gets e-mail from many students. This, Bruice says "extends my teaching across the country." The first member of her family to obtain a college degree, she credits a "wonderful chemistry professor" for inspiring her to pursue a career in the field."
