A teacher of literature for more than 30 years, Sheridan Blau says that his teaching methods have changed over the decades. "I have become increasingly committed to a workshop approach to teaching," he says. "I'm teaching more and more with my mouth shut and my eyes open to see what my students are learning." Blau enjoys it when students discover their own power to interpret and interrogate a difficult literary text. "I especially love being in a classroom community where all the members see each other as learners and as sources of knowledge for each other." At the end of a day spent in such a learning environment, he says, "I feel exhausted, yet intellectually energized." Blau adds that he feels "blessed for having been granted the gift of my vocation, and the added gift of being able to practice my profession in such a beautiful place among such smart students, and such learned and creative colleagues."
