A researcher who specializes in political philosophy, Edwina Barvosa-Carter says that research and teaching are deeply intertwined. "Research is about analyzing facts and ideas to formulate what we haven't known or thought before," she says. "The classroom is one place where that engagement with ideas can happen, a place where students and faculty can work together to reconsider what we know, and to create new ideas." In her research, Barvosa-Carter looks at how democracy can work in a nonhomogeneous country. She says she works hard to make the material in her courses something that has a connection to the everyday lives of her students, "whether it's an essay by Foucault or a Chicano public opinion poll. I hope that my students will learn how to explore ideas and material for themselves, so that they can continue to learn for a lifetime." Go to catalog listing for: Department
