A Shakespearean actor, musical composer, and theater director, Irwin Appel uses all his talents in teaching students the art of acting. "I like it that my students know I am also a professional actor," Appel says. "The whole concept of a research university is professors teaching what they are studying and doing themselves." One of the many strengths of the department here, he says, is the rigorous training students receive, especially in the unique BFA program, which is the only such degree in acting in the UC system. Entry into the program is by audition only and is very competitive. "It's an intensive, conservatory-style actor training program in an academically rigorous university," he says.
