The interdisciplinary nature of study and research at UCSB is one of many things that brought renowned feminist scholar and activist Eileen Boris to campus earlier this year to accept the Hull Chair in Women’s Studies. And it is an aspect of the UCSB philosophy that Boris feels should encourage students to come to this campus—and to the Women’s Studies Program. Boris is grateful for her own multidisciplinary undergraduate training at Boston University, where as an American Studies major she learned a wide array of analytical and critical skills. “It gave me a whole range of interpretive tools that allow me to approach multiple subjects from different angles,” Boris says. “That is why I promote interdisciplinary programs like women’s studies as an ideal undergraduate major.” Perhaps most important, women’s studies makes students aware of issues that shape the lives of us all, says Boris. |
