 Apostolos  Athanassakis
  Professor, Classics
  Argyropoulos Professor of Hellenic Studies

Individual effort is an important part of academic success. But Apostolos Athanassakis, a professor in the Department of Classics since 1968 and the first scholar named to the Argyropoulos Chair in Hellenic Studies, says students should not underestimate the value of developing working relationships with their professors.

“I perceive in our students a desire to meet their professors and mentors, and I feel this is important,” he says.

When he was an undergraduate student and recent immigrant from Greece, Athanassakis worked closely with Professor Benjamin Schwartz at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. The collaboration set him on the course of his life’s work and earned him a lifelong friend.

“I had the extremely good fortune to have a wonderful professor who became a source of inspiration to me,” says Athanassakis, who teaches classes in Greek poetry and classical linguistics. “It was really because of him that I became a classicist. He inspired me through his unabated enthusiasm for the subject.”
