Sutton Professor, Sociology |
|
Sociology professor John Sutton likes to muddy the waters, particularly for his undergraduate students. Sutton teaches undergraduate courses in the sociology of law, deviance, culture, and organizations and graduate seminars in re-search methods. "What I hope students gain is some disciplined critical thinking skills and a willingness to challenge their taken-for-granted assumptions about the world." Sutton was drawn to sociology when he was a graduate student in religion. "I discovered I didnt want so much to do speculative kinds of things. I didnt want to spend my life trying to discover the perfect ethical system. I wanted to understand how people develop their own ideologies about life and how those ideologies are related to behavior." |
