| Eve Darian-Smith Associate Professor, Anthropology |
|
The world is messy and complicated," says associate professor Eve Darian-Smith, "and my role as a teacher is to provide a forum that forces students to think and question and recognize that the world cant be reduced to a right or wrong or black and white argument." Darian-Smith left a successful corporate law practice in Australia to study the field of legal anthropology and, more specifically, the cultural differences that form peoples understanding of concepts we take for granted, such as law, justice, and morality. Recognized for her excellence in teaching, Darian-Smith received the Social Science Teaching Award in 1998. She challenges her students to "open their eyes, think for themselves, and ask critical questions."
