I seek to teach students how to think, rather than what to think," said Marguerite Bouraad-Nash, lecturer in the Department of Political Science and the Global Peace and Security Program. Professor Bouraad-Nash encourages her students to express their views, share them with each other, and examine how they deal with disagreements. "In courses about war and peace, theory, and the practice of nonviolence, disagreements are bound to occur," she explains. "What is important is how you deal with them."

Respecting differing opinions is key to establishing a civil and intellectual discourse," Bouraad-Nash believes. "Our students are intellectually gifted and are, indeed, privileged to study at UCSB, one of the finest institutions of higher learning. I want them to feel that much has been given to them and, therefore, much is expected in return in the form of contributing positively to society."
